Min, Anchee; Duo Duo; & Landsberger, Stefan: Chinese Propaganda Posters: From the Collection of Michael Wolf. Taschen, 2003. ISBN: 3822826197. Very large folio; 320 pp. “… a selection of colorful propaganda artworks … from photographer Michael Wolf’s vast collection …. Over 300 posters produced … to promote values and to portray the bright future of the People's Republic of China. With essays examining the history of Chinese propaganda and the experience of living in Mao's China.” Sumptuous illustrations (most full-page) and full caption translations are the primary virtues. Pedestrian 2-pp intros by a poster-subject, a poster-maker, and a collector. The display is so notably deficient in woodblock posters, “primitive” art, and the coarser aspects of the Cultural Revolution, including even Mao-idolatry, that one suspects implicit censorship rather than limitations of the collector’s tastes.  [MR]

The texts, including extensive captions, powerfully evoke the degraded disaster of this war; yet the rich suite of images seems oddly distanced, with few exceptions, by virtue of its general aestheticization of the terrible -- due perhaps to the pervasive influence of Polish poster work, posited by the authors, but seemingly more directly to the predominance of images by professional designers.
